Whether you have just begun dating or you are celebrating a Golden Anniversary, most partners are aware that communication is a crucial component in relationship happiness and satisfaction. Most self-help books extol it, and most experts working with couples encourage and facilitate improved communication.

Dr. Marianne Legato, author of Why Men Never Remember and Women Never Forget contends that without effective couple communication, there is no relationship at all.

A crucial but often overlooked communication skill for partners is knowing when it is best not to say anything.

This skill is not about suppression, quiet compliance, the silent treatment, dismissal or neglect. It is a choice that reflects attunement, empathy, regulation of emotions and prioritizing the bond you share.

It is knowing those times when your comment, critique, opinion, question or news not only fails to add value ? it makes matters worse!

While there are always differences among couples relative to their personal histories and dynamics, here are some situations that many face for which the decision not to say anything may be best.

Fueling the Fire

A real stumbling block for old and young couples who are arguing is knowing when ?enough is enough.? ?More specifically, recognizing that it is an illusion to think that there is something to gain in ?having the last word.?

In almost all cases insisting on one more comment does nothing productive. Usually it escalates the tension and anger and jeopardizes resolution.

As Ferguson author of Reptiles in Love?suggests, when partners are in fight/flight mode, logic is gone and no one wins.

Stopping is a protective and important step in anger management. It prevents saying the unsayable ? those words we can?t take back. It also prevents the dangerous escalation from verbal to physical aggression.

Breaking the Confidence

One of the ingredients in the intimacy of any couple is what they share as confidantes. Feeling safe, partners share dreams, frailties, imperfect body parts, traumatic memories and self-doubts in a way they share with no one else.

Regardless of what others are disclosing, which family member is asking, or how much everyone is?enjoying ?partner bashing? ? don?t take the bait.

Protecting each other?s confidence is a gift of trust only partners can give to each other.

But I Was Just Trying to Help

Despite the fact that every couple self-help book recommends that unless asked, don?t give advice ? most of us err in favor of ?just trying to help.?

Actually on close reflection, it is often our own sense of anxiety and helplessness in face of?a partner?s distress that throws us into advice mode.? We have to do something!

Listening with eye-to-eye contact and hand-to-hand reach is far more powerful than unsolicited advice.? A partner who feels your support is more empowered to solve his/her problem and will more likely ask for help if needed.

?Getting To Not Know You

? I know just what he/she is going to say!?

As much as you think you know your partner ? think again. What makes a relationship interesting and vital is recognizing what you still don?t know about each other.

Toward this end one verbal talent you want to drop is the compulsion to finish your partner?s sentence. (trust me) ?Listening instead of speaking puts you in a position to hear what you may or may not expect from your partner. Finishing the other?s sentence changes dialogue into monologue. It often shuts down present and future discussion and precludes more knowing.

When partners do this to each other in public ? the audience is sent the message that he/she cannot speak for himself/herself or that you need to be in control ? neither option is desirable.

Disqualifying The Compliment

????Great? That?s ridiculous. You know I hate my hair.?

Sometimes a childhood history can take its toll on self-esteem or you can hit a tough time in life when a job or a?health situation saps too much of your confidence. These are times when having a loving and affirming partner can be a powerful source for healing and restoring self.

These are the times, however, when you may feel compelled to speak? i.e.?to verbally debate, discount or argue away a partner?s compliment. While these are times when nothing feels right, to verbally undo a compliment is to disqualify something important ? a little bit of light sent in by someone who loves you.

Positive emotions have the unique quality of broadening and building both social and psychological resources. Accepting a compliment is a positive exchange for both of you.

Taking Up The Family Fight

It is inevitable that partners will complain about their families of origin to each other and will enjoy the support of the other in seeing it their way.

What never works, however, is feeling entitled to verbally criticize, belittle or put down your partner?s family.? Yes, you have heard about these people. Yes, you have felt outraged and protective of your partner. But your partner needs you to hear it and contain the feelings more than he/she needs you to keep bringing up how outrageous or unacceptable they may be.

As difficult as it may be, it is emotionally more supportive to listen than speak about his/her family?because regardless of whether families are bad or good, most people feel connected with them. Often adult children of dysfunctional families carry considerable shame and self-blame which is exacerbated when someone reminds them about it. Needing to feel different and vital, your partner prefers that you focus more on him/her than the family of origin.

Listening is what no one may have done in the childhood ? your partner finally has someone willing to do that ? you.

No News is Good News

As much as it is very valuable for couples to share experiences together, it is?also important?to show?respect for and encouragement of each other?s passions and interests in other people, places and things.

His love of watching sports, her weekly book club, his commitment to teaching, her love of nursing are actually valuable to the relationship as they nurture and support each as individuals.

That said, it is important to think twice about verbally intruding into your partner?s recreation or workspace. If you feel a sense of urgency ? put yourself in your partner?s shoes and re-evaluate your urgent need to speak.

Does he really need to hear about the painter?s estimate in the middle of the game?

Does she really need a call about your 5th grader?s science project at her book club?

He does care about the news of your brother in law ? but not in the middle of his workday.

She may not fully appreciate your enthusiasm about discount plane fares if she has to hear about it in the hallway at work.

When partners feel that their time and space?are respected, they usually can?t wait to share and hear what the other has to say!

Sharing the Sounds of Silence

Often people remark that the way they know that they are really connected is that they can be together without saying anything.

This is the place where no one is speaking but a great deal is being communicated.

This is the place where both are safe enough in the relationship that they feel the other without having to verbally hold the tie or check the mood with words.

This is the place where partners embrace the silence between them as intimate space.

As valuable as the words are between us ? silence can be the most powerful communication of all.?

?

Monday, February 20, 2012 In two landmark papers in the journal Nature this week, scientists at The Scripps Research Institute report that they have identified a class of proteins that detect “painful touch.” Scientists have known that sensory nerves in our skin detect pressure, pain, heat, cold, and other stimuli using specialized “ion channel” proteins in their outer membranes. They have only just begun, however, to identify and characterize the specific proteins involved in each of these sensory pathways. The new work provides evidence that a family of sensory nerve proteins known as piezo proteins are ion channel proteins essential to the sensation of painful touch. The experiments in the new study were conducted in fruit flies, a model system for the sensory nervous system of mammals, where piezo proteins are also expressed, as well as in certain cell types in the ear, kidney, heart, and other tissues. Future studies will focus on the roles of piezo proteins in sensing sound, blood pressure, and related stimuli that press and/or stretch cell membranes. “Researchers in this field have been trying for decades to identify pressure-transducing ion channel proteins that exist in mammals, and these piezo proteins are exceptionally strong candidates,” said Ardem Patapoutian, a professor in the Department of Cell Biology and the Dorris Neuroscience Center at Scripps Research, and a senior investigator for both papers. “We now have solid clues that we can follow up to learn how the mechanotransduction pathway works and how it is disrupted in diseases.”....

“We now have solid clues that we can follow up to learn how the mechanotransduction pathway works and how it is disrupted in diseases.”

The two papers appear online in Nature on February 19, 2012.

Following the Path of Clues

Patapoutian’s laboratory specializes in the study of sensory ion-channel proteins. When hit by a stimulus to which it is sensitive, one of these proteins typically will open its structure to allow charged calcium, sodium, or potassium molecules (“ions”) to flow from the fluid outside the cell into the cell’s interior. Ion channels that sense mechanical pressure are thought to open when the membrane in which they are embedded is distorted past a certain threshold. The resulting flow of charge can trigger other signals inside the cell, for example a nerve impulse within sensory neurons?and in a human, a sufficient number of these nerve impulses would be interpreted by the brain as a touch- or pressure-related feeling.

In a highly cited paper published in Science in late 2010, Patapoutian and his colleagues reported that two mouse proteins of previously unknown function exhibited properties of mechanotransducers. Cells to which these proteins were added drew in positively charged ions when subjected to mechanical pressure. Bertrand Coste, the first author of the paper, named the two closely related proteins piezo1 and piezo2?the prefix “piezo-” being derived from the ancient Greek word for pressure or squeezing.

“Since these proteins bore little resemblance to known ion channel proteins, the next step for us was to confirm that they are indeed ion channel proteins,” Patapoutian said. The new studies take this step and more.

In the first of the new studies, lead authors Bertrand Coste, Bailong Xiao, and their colleagues confirmed that piezo proteins are indeed ion channel proteins, and very large ones. “It assembles into a ‘tetramer’ complex of four piezo proteins, which appears to be the biggest plasma membrane ion channel yet discovered,” said Coste, a research associate in the Patapoutian lab. The protein sequences within piezo also suggest that its ion channel structure weaves through the cell membrane more than 100 times.

Collaborating researchers in the laboratory of Mauricio Montal, a Distinguished Professor of Neurobiology at the University of California, San Diego, found that even in the absence of other proteins, piezo proteins could self-assemble into this tetramer complex, forming ion channels in artificial membranes known as lipid bilayers.

The second of the new studies involved experiments with the fruit fly Drosophila. Sung Eun Kim, first author of the study, genetically engineered a line of Drosophila that does not express the Drosophila piezo (dpiezo) gene. “We found that their larvae showed a severe loss of responsiveness to mechanical stimuli that would be expected to generate pain-related signals, though they responded normally to other kinds of stimuli such as heat and mild pressure,” she said. Kim is a graduate student who divides her time between the Patapoutian lab and the lab of Scripps Research Assistant Professor Boaz Cook, who was co-principal investigator of this study.

Kim also used genetic “knockdown” techniques in Drosophila to show that interrupting dpiezo expression in certain sensory neurons could reproduce this loss of sensitivity. Finally, when she artificially reinstated dpiezo expression in larvae that had been born without the gene, they displayed normal sensitivity to strong pressure. “It’s the first demonstration of a specific physiological function of a piezo family protein,” said Cook.

The Patapoutian lab now is now conducting detailed follow-up studies of piezo and other possible mechanotransduction proteins. “In the next several years, we’ll be trying to determine all the biological processes and diseases in which these pressure-sensing proteins play a role,” he said.

Having real time access to these detailed reports and dashboards will allow you to optimise many of your business processes a lot more quickly than the usual manual system. CRM stands for Customer Relationship Management and while CRM does refer to a program to manage customer information the better CRM software does much more than that. CRM software not only allows the organizing of customer information, but CRM software also provides the means to track sales leads from the time they are obtained until the sales are closed.

There are many inexpensive CRM software systems that can be tailored to the needs of any business regardless of size. They can be integrated into most standard computer email software programs making them very easy to set up and another bonus is that very little training is actually needed for users of the sales team or any others to fully understand and effectively use the programming.

Spot-on CRM brings together information from all data sources within an organisation and where appropriate from outside the organization to give one, all-inclusive and well-rounded view of each customer in real time. This allows employees interfacing with clienteles in such areas as sales, customer support and marketing to make quick yet totally informed decisions on everything from cross-selling, upselling breaks to targeted marketing strategies in addition competitive positioning tactics. As you can see CRM can offer a lot on many different sides of any business as well as offer more possibilities and strategies on dealing and organising circumstances on them.

After all, good customer relationships are at the heart of business success. There are many technological components to CRM, but principally it is as a process that will help bring together lots of pieces of information about customers, sales, marketing effectiveness, responsiveness and market trends. This insight allows for improved customer service, increased call center efficiency, improved close rates, streamlined sales, improved customer profiling and targeting, reduced costs, and increased share of customer and overall profitability. CRM really is the next step in providing quality control when dealing with difficult problems like time loss plus dealing and analysing mass amounts of data quickly under pressure.

Though it does sound like an all curing solution it does need constant interaction and input of details about information dealing with everything previously mentioned, if not it won’t be working at peak efficiency, not giving you full return on investment so it is an asset but only with a bit of elbow grease. Have a little further look into CRM specified for the construction industry and see if it can benefit your enterprise.

One common request from new GRS readers is some sort of central location where they can find a list of introductory articles to guide their progress. This is a great idea, and I’m working on it. Some of the GRS elves are working on a “Guide to Money” that will provide some of this info, but I envision a single page that collects all of the relevant articles for folks starting out.

In the meantime, folks like Ashley are hoping they can get some help now. Ashley writes:

I’m a new reader to the blog and just wanted to say thanks for presenting often overwhelming information in a digestible manner. As someone whose former financial philosophy was “ignorance is bliss”, GRS has played an integral part in my transformation from 30 year old faux-dult to real, live adult, at least in the personal finance category.

My question is this: What does a generally healthy personal financial portfolio look like? What are some must-haves for everyone and in what order should I work on getting them? It seems like a simple question, I know, but I’m picking myself up from living paycheck to paycheck and struggling with debt and I want to set some goals: savings, debt, retirement, investments (gulp). I realize it’s hard to generalize, but what does a good adult’s finances look like?

Ashley’s right: It is hard to generalize. Everyone is different, with different strengths, different weaknesses and different goals. Still, it’s possible to make a few recommendations. There’s a core group of financial structures that I believe are important to everyone. And there are many ways to customize a “personal financial portfolio” (as Ashley calls it) in order address you own personal aims.

Building a Base

When I talk with people about how they should set up their finances, I generally recommend the following:

Carry no debt — except maybe a mortgage. Though there are a handful of exceptions to this rule, I believe that most of us shouldn’t carry non-mortgage debt. We should avoid credit cards, car loans and other consumer debt. Sure, that means we have to wait and save. It may mean that we drive used cars. (I drive an eight-year-old Mini Cooper!) But avoiding debt allows us to reach big goals while others are barely getting started with the small stuff.

Build adequate emergency savings. What is “adequate” savings? That’s tough to say. When you’re just starting out — especially if you’re carrying debt — adequate savings might mean simply that you have $100 in the bank. But as time goes on, you’ll want to build a buffer in the bank. It’s an amazing feeling to know that were your job to vanish, you can still get by for six months before falling into debt.

Fund your retirement. When you begin saving for retirement, you won’t have much. Plus, retirement will seem as if it’s decades away. Because it is. But just because you have 45 years before you’ll be eligible for retirement benefits, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t start. The biggest factor in retirement savings is how much you contribute. The second biggest factor is time. If you start socking money away in a Roth IRA or a 401(k) when you’re just 20 years old, you’ll be light years ahead of your peers. (And that’s when you’re 35, not even when you’re 65!)

Be insured. Some people think they’re above the law of averages, above forces of nature, and they choose not to carry adequate insurance on the important things in their lives — such as their car and their home and their body. But as most of us here can testify, bad things happen. And when they do, costs add up. You can mitigate the expenses by carrying adequate insurance, by which I mean the right insurance (and the right amount of insurance) for your circumstance. What type of insurance (and how much) is that? The answer’s different for everyone, but it’s not difficult to learn.

Develop a budget — even if it’s just a loose guideline. When you have a budget, you’re telling your money where to go. You’re in control. Without a budget, it’s easy to lose track of what you’re spending where. A proper budget doesn’t have to be super detailed (thought it can be if that works for you). Instead, it simply has to guide your spending in a way that keeps you from losing control.

Boost your income. There are two camps when it comes to increasing income: Those who think it’s irrelevant (or impossible) for their situation, and those who know it’s difficult but do it anyhow. I’m convinced that those who work to make more money, despite the obstacles in their lives, have more financial success.

These are some of the basics, though not all of them. These core skills and habits can help almost anyone get started on the path to prosperity.

Customizing Your Course

Once you’ve become accustomed to the basics, it’s important to customize your financial habits and structures to reflect your personal skills, goal, and psychology.

For instance, some folks are opposed to debt in all forms. These people avoid credit cards, certainly, and often try to avoid mortgage debt as well. Other GRS readers love credit cards. They never abuse them, never carry a balance, and never pay any sorts of fees. And some are eager to carry a low-rate, long-term mortgage because they figure they can put that money to work elsewhere to earn a better return.

Another example is automation. For most people, automation is liberating. By creating a system whereby you make automatic contributions to saving, to your retirement plan, and to your bills, you take the weakest link — you — out of the chain. But for a few people, automation actually creates problems. For these folks, it’s important to do things manually.

So, you see, once you have a solid financial base, you begin to build a customized financial framework based on your personal needs. And these needs are determined by your goals.

Until you have personal financial goals, you can’t really know what’s “healthy” for you. Emergency funds are a great example. Some folks — such as Trent at The Simple Dollar — don’t feel comfortable unless they have a sizable emergency fund, such as a year (or more) of monthly income. I, on the other hand, am OK with six months worth of expenses in savings. Based on my psychological make-up and my personal goals, this is plenty.

Reader Response

My own financial profile? Let’s see if I can summarize it quickly:

I carry no debt, but I do use credit cards. I repay the balance every month and pocket the 1 percent cash-back rewards.

I have six months of expenses in emergency savings.

I fully fund my retirement plans every year, meaning I fund them to the maximum that the law will allow.

I invest in low-cost index funds instead of trying to beat the market through guesswork.

I carry adequate insurance, but employ high deductibles to reduce my costs.

I use targeted savings to pursue other goals, such as travel. By using multiple savings accounts, I’m able to save for the things I want without losing track of my larger goals.

I use the balanced money formula to keep my spending on track. This isn’t a strict budget, but it’s a loose framework to guide my financial decisions. I like it.

There’s more to it than this, of course. That’s where you come in. Until I’ve had a chance to compile a beginner’s guide to personal financial mastery, Ashley’s best bet is to listen to the advice of GRS readers.

What do you think? What advice do you have for Ashley? Is there such thing as a one-size-fits-all starter financial portfolio? If so, what does it look like? How does it change with time? If not, then what do you think different people should do (and have) at different stages in life?
