CARACAS, Venezuela ? Venezuela’s congress has approved a law aimed at fighting organized crime and terrorism, though opposition lawmakers say they fear it could be used to crack down on dissent.

Lawmakers allied with President Hugo Chavez say the “Law Against Organized Crime and Terrorism Financing” will help combat crimes such as money laundering, bomb threats and airplane hijackings.

Rights activists on Wednesday urged lawmakers to modify the legislation before it takes effect. They say it allows accusations from anonymous informants that could lead to violations of due process.

The law was approved late Tuesday.
