  ZANESVILLE, Ohio ? The owner of an exotic animal preserve who committed suicide after freeing dozens of lions, tigers and other beasts owed tens of thousands in unpaid taxes, and a fellow big-cat enthusiast said Thursday that he had taken in so many creatures he was “in over his head.” A day after sheriff’s deputies with high-powered rifles killed nearly 50 animals set free by Terry Thompson, the sheriff refused to speculate why he did it. Meanwhile, neighbors and friends questioned why Thompson ? a man who seemed to like animals more than people ? would send his animals to their doom. Thompson was mired in debt. Court records show that he and his wife owed at least $68,000 in unpaid taxes to the IRS and the county, and he had two federal tax liens filed against him last year. He had just gotten out of federal prison last month for possessing unregistered weapons. Kenny Hetrick, who has six tigers and other animals on his property outside Toledo, said he used to see Thompson at exotic-animal auctions a few times a year in Ohio.   Tuesday morning, near Guadalupe in North County Santa Barbara, one of California?s most controversial and newly approved pesticides was applied to some five acres of land soon to be planted with strawberries. Looking to cure a stubborn case of Macrophomina (a rot-causing pathogen) in their fields, G&S Farms???after securing a special permit from the agricultural commissioner?s office last Wednesday???applied methyl iodide to its farmland. It was only the fifth such commercial application of the potentially cancer-causing pesticide in the state since it was made legal late last?year. [Editor?s Note: The methyl iodide application, contrary to initial reports, did not occur Tuesday morning and has been rescheduled to Monday?morning.] Expressing his dismay about the application of the fumigant, Paul Towers, a spokesperson for watchdog organization Pesticide Action Network (PAN), said simply, ?There is no question in the scientific community that [methyl iodide] is too toxic to use. This is a really unfortunate decision by officials to basically ignore the science on this and put people at risk.? In an ironic twist, PAN filed a lawsuit in Alameda County courts that aims to roll back the state?s policy toward methyl iodide on the same day S.B. County issued G&S its?permit.   Halloween suicide scam spreads on Facebook

  As millions of kids and their parents satisfy a post-Halloween sweet tooth, Facebook scammers are spreading an especially nasty campaign to revive last night’s fright and lure people into compromising their computer security. The Facebook message, which began spreading Tuesday, shows a picture of a bloodied woman and reads, “Girl Killed Herself on Halloween After Dad Posted This on Her Wall.” Beneath a link, it reads, “This is unbelievable? .. shocking..” To see what supposedly caused the girl to take her own life, Facebook users are prompted to click on the link, the security firm Sophos reported. The image of the bloody woman is bad enough, but clicking on the link redirects users to a Web page that reads, “After a long day at basketball tryouts, this girl came home to this disturbing message. Nobody knows for now why or what made her dad do it, but he posted this on her wall ? R.I.P.” Though the scam never identifies her, the photo on the second page is of Megan Meier, a Missouri 13-year-old who really did commit suicide in 2006 after being relentlessly cyberbullied on MySpace. The rest of the scam follows a traditional course: victims are told to “Share” and “Recommend” the link with their friends, which keeps it spreading. They are then taken to a survey page, which generates revenue for the scammers, and in the end there is no video. Facebook scams appear every single day, and people continue to fall for them.   Tripoli airport closed after militias clash

It was the latest in a series of clashes between the rival militias which, in the absence of a fully-functioning central government, have wielded real power on the streets in Libya since a revolt forced out former leader Moammar Gadhafi. Mukhtar Al-Akhdar, commander of the airport’s security force and head of a militia unit from Zintan, south-west of Tripoli, which controls the international airport, told Reuters on Sunday that a convoy of vehicles approached a checkpoint about 3 km (2 miles) from the airport. He said the armed men in the convoy said they had come to take over security, and a gunfight then broke out. “No one was killed. We have only two people injured on our side,” Al-Akhdar told Reuters. “These people were using national army vehicles. When we asked (acting army chief of staff Khalifa) Haftar about it, he said he did not know these people.” NTC military spokesman Ahmed Bani did not comment on the details of the incident but said: “There is no political or other problem.
