From Zatz Not Funny comes word that TiVo owners are being notified their access to Blockbuster On Demand will come to an end March 31st, ending a run originally announced three years before. While this certainly affects TiVo’s ability to offer the one box to search multiple services idea introduced with the Premiere, it could be more telling about Blockbuster’s plans for the current incarnation of its internet movie service. As forum posters on TiVo Community point out, the list of supported devices is rapidly shrinking, with Vizio and Western Digital WD TV Live owners getting their own Dear John letters only a year or so after the app originally rolled out. Currently, the list of connected TV devices is limited exclusively to Samsung HDTVs and Blu-ray players, plus some cellphones and tablets. Once upon a time, Blockbuster desired an On Demand presence in “nearly every connected device” — not to mention “major market presence” for the now Redbox-owned Express kiosks — but after its purchase by Dish Network clearly those days are over. Now the only question is if / when we’ll see a new service that better fits with the already announced Movie Pass package and what devices it might work on. Blockbuster On Demand pulls back from TiVo and others, is it on its way out? originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 18 Feb 2012 19:16:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds. By RAF CASERT Associated Press Associated Press Sports updated 11:17 a.m. ET Feb. 14, 2012 BRUSSELS (AP) -The furious activity in the trading pits of the world’s great stock exchanges often gives the feeling that every second is gold dust in the relentless rush to make money. Then all of a sudden it’s kickoff time, and everything changes. A wide-ranging study from the European Central Bank has found that the football World Cup has a huge impact on traders. Many stock exchanges effectively go into slow motion when the games are on. “When the national team was playing, the number of trades dropped by 45 percent, while volumes were 55 percent lower,” the ECB said in a study on the 2010 World Cup in South Africa that was released on its website Monday. “Stock markets were following developments on the soccer pitch rather than in the trading pit,” it concluded. And if trade already dropped dramatically during some games, every goal that was scored forced another brief five percent drop in activity, the ECB said in its in its 35-page report entitled “The pitch rather than the pit. Investor inattention during FIFA World Cup matches.” Traders of course are hardly alone in falling for the World Cup distractions. At global summits, government leaders briefly postpone meetings or sneak out of negotiations when their team is on the pitch. At borders, guards sometimes don’t even look at passing traffic when games are on. Researchers for the ECB could base themselves on….
WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama will tour a downtown Washington office building Friday and announce a $4 billion effort to increase the energy efficiency of government and private sector buildings. The owners of the building on Connecticut Avenue have agreed to make it more energy efficient under the president’s plan. The proposal, to be announced by Obama and former President Bill Clinton, would upgrade buildings over the next two years with a goal of improving energy performance by 20 percent by 2020. Later, Obama will host the White House Tribal Nations Conference at the Interior Department. It’s part of the president’s ongoing outreach to the American people. Leaders from 565 federally recognized tribes will have the opportunity to interact directly with Obama and representatives of his administration.
