  Researchers use mummy DNA to differentiate croc species

  Monday, December 19, 2011 The Nile crocodile is a species that was identified by ancient Egyptians. Genetic analysis done by a group of geneticists using samples taken from species throughout the animal’s range and including DNA from mummified crocodile remains indicates that more than one species is known by this name. “This paper provides a remarkable surprise: the Nile crocodile is not a single species, as previously thought, but instead demonstrates two species – living side-by side – constitute what has been called the Nile croc.” Said Marlys Houck, geneticist with San Diego Zoo Global’s Institute of Conservation Research. “Even more remarkably, they are not each other’s closest relatives; one is more closely related to New World crocodilians. The cryptic Crocodylus suchus is a unique entity worthy of a conservation strategy separate from the Nile crocodile populations of East and southern Africa.” The study, published in the October issue of Molecular Ecology, provides important information about a species that is not only an important historical icon but also critically endangered. Recent survey efforts indicate that Crocodylus suchus is declining or extirpated throughout much of its distribution.   Obama promotes energy efficiency, hosts tribes (AP)

  WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama will tour a downtown Washington office building Friday and announce a $4 billion effort to increase the energy efficiency of government and private sector buildings. The owners of the building on Connecticut Avenue have agreed to make it more energy efficient under the president’s plan. The proposal, to be announced by Obama and former President Bill Clinton, would upgrade buildings over the next two years with a goal of improving energy performance by 20 percent by 2020. Later, Obama will host the White House Tribal Nations Conference at the Interior Department. It’s part of the president’s ongoing outreach to the American people. Leaders from 565 federally recognized tribes will have the opportunity to interact directly with Obama and representatives of his administration.   Clinton in Kabul to push Afghan reconciliation (AP)

  KABUL, Afghanistan ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is encouraging Afghanistan’s wary leadership to keep up Taliban reconciliation efforts and boosting counterterrorism cooperation with Pakistan as the Obama administration presses ahead with troop withdrawal plans. Clinton arrived in Kabul late Wednesday on an unannounced visit and was scheduled to see President Hamid Karzai, other top Afghan officials and civic leaders on Thursday. Her trip came after Karzai expressed frustration with attempts to woo Taliban fighters away from the insurgency amid increasing attacks by the Taliban-allied, Pakistan-based Haqqani network. Clinton was also to underscore the importance of linking Afghanistan to its neighbors, a consideration for a regional conference in Istanbul in early November, U.S. officials said. The U.S. sees a political settlement with the Taliban as key to ending the war and is pushing Karzai to lead and expand a reconciliation drive, although the Taliban has indicated no public interest in such a deal. A secret U.S. effort to spark negotiations earlier this year angered Karzai. The goal of reconciling fighters who renounce al-Qaida and violence and embrace Afghanistan’s constitution was dealt a major blow with the assassination last month of elder statesman Burhanuddin Rabbani, who was leading Karzai’s outreach. Rabbani was killed when he greeted a suicide bomber posing as a Taliban emissary bearing a reconciliation message. A senior U.S. official said Clinton would emphasize that the U.S. remains committed to Afghan reconciliation and understands the difficulties that that process has undergone since the assassination.
