Like any good search engine, iStockphoto?s ranking algorithm is a dynamic, organic process driven by statistics drawn from past interest in the content. The Scientist-as-Mad-Scientist, ?and the lab-coat-and-blue-liquid clich?, are driven by image buyers. Thus, these are images that conform to preconceptions of how society wants scientists to look. Stock agencies are selling society back its own stereotype, and the merry-go-round spins ever onward. Now go do yourself a favor and have a look at?real scientists. Finding a reasonable accommodation is a two-way street. Both the employer and the disabled employee are supposed to engage in the ADA?s interactive accommodations process. The idea: Working together, the two can reach a workable accommodation that best suits both business needs and the employee?s particular disability. But part of that interactive process includes determining whether the employee is, in fact, disabled. If he?s not, the process need go no further. That?s why the process should start with gathering facts from the em??ployee and his doctors so you can assess the employee?s condition and determine if it impairs a major life function such as walking, talking, seeing, breathing and caring for oneself. The report may surprise you. While an employee may think of his condition as disabling, medical specialists may not. If the doctors don?t think the employee?s condition impairs a major life function, you needn?t go further. The employee isn?t covered by the ADA because he?s not disabled. Recent case: Rommel Griffin worked for UPS for 28 years, mostly as a supervisor on the 2 to 10 p.m. shift. Griffin has diabetes, which requires him to eat carefully while managing his insulin levels. Griffin took some time off for stress-related ailments. When he returned, he was informed that his shift would change to the overnight shift. He pro??tested, claiming that working overnight would aggravate his diabetes. He wanted to switch to the day shift. UPS immediately began the reasonable accommodations process by re??questing information from Griffin?s doctors. At that….
Haier Establishes Asian Headquarters in Japan as Part of Its Global Expansion Strategy TOKYO, February 15, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – – The world’s No. 1 Global Major Appliances brand plans its growth in Asia by establishing a stronger foothold in Japan At a press conference today, Haier Group, the world’s No. 1 Global Major Appliances brand, officially announced its plans to establish its Asian headquarters in Osaka, and two R&D centers in Tokyo and Kyoto, a development that now establishes Japan an overseas market that combines all of the three key elements for business – R&D, manufacturing, and marketing. The conference marked the official unveiling of Haier’s second brand in Japan, AQUA. Last year, Haier purchased SANYO’s washing machine and consumer refrigerator businesses in Japan, in addition to its washing machine, refrigerator and consumer home electric appliances businesses in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam. AQUA, as part of SANYO’s intangible assets, was transferred to Haier in 2011. Meanwhile, Haier owns two brands, Haier and AQUA, in the Japanese market as part of its dual brand strategy. Haier expected its sales in Japan to reach 50 billion yen in 2012, including AQUA’s estimated 35 billion yen. However, the company emphasized that it is not only eying an increase in market share. “What is most important for us is to better understand Japanese consumers, and provide high-quality appliances to meet the demands of their….
BEIJING (Reuters) ? China on Wednesday criticized U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta for praising Beijing’s measured reaction to the latest U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, repaying his compliment by saying the deal was “unprofessional.” Past U.S. arms sales to Taiwan have prompted Beijing to temporarily cut-off ties with the U.S. military, as happened after last year’s $6.4 billion arms package. China deems the self-ruled island an illegitimate breakaway from Beijing’s rule that must accept eventual reunification. But last month’s U.S. announcement of a $5.85 billion arms package for Taiwan, including upgrades to F-16 A/B fighter aircraft, has been different, with China handling it in a “professional and diplomatic way,” Panetta said. Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun begged to differ. “Frankly, if I may borrow Mr. Panetta’s words, I think the way the United States handles certain issues in Sino-U.S. relations is neither professional nor diplomatic,” he told a news briefing in Beijing. The United States had not abided by promises to reduce and ultimately stop arms sales to Taiwan, once more damaging China’s core interests, Yang said, according to a transcript posted on the ministry’s website (www.mod.gov.cn). “An important precondition for the stable development of Sino-U.S. military relations is the respect and consideration shown toward each other’s core interests and important areas of concern,” he said.
