  Too Few Americans Getting Screened for Common Cancers: CDC (HealthDay)

  THURSDAY, Jan. 26 (HealthDay News) — The number of Americans being screened for colon, breast and cervical cancers still fall below national targets, federal health officials said Thursday. In 2010, 72.4 percent of women were being screened for breast cancer, below the target of 81 percent, for cervical cancer it was 83 percent of women, while the target is 93 percent, and for colon cancer 58.6 percent of Americans were screened, missing the target of 70.5 percent, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Not all Americans are getting the recommended screening for breast, cervical and colorectal cancer,” said report co-author Mary C. White, branch chief of the CDC’s Division of Cancer Prevention and Control. “There continue to be disparities for certain populations.” The screening rates are particularly low among Asians and Hispanics, according to the report in the Jan. 27 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Among Asians, the screening rate for breast cancer was 64.1 percent, for cervical cancer it was 75.4 percent, and for colon cancer it was 46.9 percent. Hispanics were less likely than non-Hispanics to have screening for cervical and colon cancer (78.7 percent and 46.5 percent, respectively), the researchers found. Screening is important, said Dr. Stephanie Bernik, chief of surgical oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. “Screening saves lives,” she said. “When you catch a cancer at a smaller size it does affect outcome.” Some people may be confused about screening, because different medical groups have different….

  The busy mind of Newt Gingrich has been much in the news lately. He’s the man of grand ideas — a thinker, a theorist, the big brain in a GOP field of bureaucrats and simpletons. Don’t believe it? Don’t worry, Gingrich himself will tell you. Gingrich’s mind indeed does churn. The problem is, he approaches ideas the way a gluttonous gourmand approaches food — with a rich, complex and subtle appetite, but also a hopeless weakness for corn dogs and Twinkies. If it’s edible — or, in his case, imaginable — he’s interested. This can be awkward, particularly when he steps outside of his comfort zone of history and public policy and starts to muck around with science. (Watch “10 Questions for Newt Gingrich.”) Much has been made of some of Gingrich’s wackier ideas in the past few weeks, beginning with his oft-repeated worry that a rogue state with a nuclear weapon could shut down the U.S. power grid. To give Gingrich his due, there’s a grain of truth in his fears. Scientists agree — theoretically at least — that a missile detonated at the right altitude could trigger what’s known as an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that could fry the circuits of whatever country lay below.   Grammy-winning singer Cesaria Evora dies at age 70

  LISBON, Portugal?? Cesaria Evora, who started singing as a teenager in the bayside bars of Cape Verde in the 1950s and won a Grammy in 2003 after she took her African islands music to stages across the world, died Saturday. She was 70. Evora, known as the “Barefoot Diva” because she always performed without shoes, died in the Baptista de Sousa Hospital in Mindelo, on her native island of Sao Vicente in Cape Verde, her label Lusafrica said in a statement on its website. It gave no further details. Evora retired in September because of health problems. In recent years she had had several operations, including open-heart surgery last year. She sang the traditional music of the Cape Verde Islands off West Africa, a former Portuguese colony. She mostly sang in the version of creole spoken there, but even audiences who couldn’t understand the lyrics were moved by her stirring renditions, her unpretentious manner and the music’s infectious beat. Her singing style brought comparisons to American jazz singer Billie Holiday. “She belongs to the aristocracy of bar singers,” French newspaper Le Monde said in 1991, adding that Evora had “a voice to melt the soul.” Evora’s international fame came late in life.
