NEW YORK ? U.S. stock futures are mixed Wednesday as investors weigh poor economic figures from the United Kingdom and a possible impasse in important debt negotiations in Greece against a bang-up earnings report from Apple.

Dow Jones industrial futures are down 47 points to 12,579, while S&P 500 futures are down 4 points to 1,307. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite is up 15 points to 2,452 after Apple Inc.’s earnings blew past expectations. The company sold 37 million iPhones in the last three months of 2011.

European stock markets fell as Greek bondholders met for a closed-door meeting in Paris to discuss how ? and whether ? to continue talks central to Europe’s debt crisis.

Adding to gloom was a report that Britain’s economy shrank by 0.2 percent in 2011′s fourth quarter.

THESSALONIKI, Greece ? Police in northern Greece have arrested a village priest and a church elder for allegedly digging for treasure in the chancel of the church.

A police statement Friday says villagers complained of loud drilling noises late Thursday from the church at Fyska near Kilkis, some 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Thessaloniki.

Officers found a two-by-one-meter (six-by-three-foot) hole in the chancel of the 150-year-old church of the Prophet Elijah. Police are seeking four other people suspected of taking part in the illegal dig ? in which a pneumatic drill was used.

Illegal treasure hunting has increased amid Greece’s acute financial crisis. In recent months, police have made a string of arrests, mainly in the north of the country, and located several tunnels.

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China on Thursday criticized the European Union for banning oil imports from Iran, Beijing’s third biggest crude supplier and a major trading partner.

The European Union agreed on Monday to ban imports of oil from Iran and imposed a number of other economic sanctions, joining the United States in a new round of measures aimed at pushing Iran into reining in its nuclear activities that Tehran says are for peaceful purposes.

China, the world’s second largest crude consumer, has long opposed unilateral sanctions that target Iran’s energy sector and has tried to reduce tensions that could threaten its oil supply.

Last week, Beijing told a visiting Iranian delegation that returning to nuclear talks was a “top priority.” During a tour to Arab states earlier this month, Chinese premier Wen Jiabao also made a strong statement opposing Iran developing and possessing nuclear weapons, but defended China’s right to buy Iranian crude oil as normal trade activity.

Asked about the EU embargo, China’s Foreign Ministry said in a faxed statement: “It is not a constructive approach to simply pile up the pressure and impose sanctions.”

“China hopes relevant parties to resort to measures conducive to regional peace and stability,” the statement added.

China is the largest buyer of Iranian crude oil, importing 30 percent more from Iran in 2011 compared to the previous year. But China halved its purchases from Iran in January and February, following a dispute over the terms of payment.

The Climate Science Legal Defense Fund, established last year to support climate scientists who are under attack by the global warming denial machine, has teamed up with a new sponsor, Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility. This is a good development ? a project that should be strengthened, under the wing of an organization that can?make that happen. The CSLDF?s first?action has been to help Michael Mann with legal expenses in a case involving the right-wing American Tradition Institute and the University of Virginia.

Climate Science Legal Defense Fund home page

From PEER?s January 25 press release:

CLIMATE SCIENCE LEGAL DEFENSE FUND GETS NEW BACKING

PEER Sponsors Effort to Counter Fossil-Fueled Attacks on Climate Scientists

Washington, DC ? The Climate Science Legal Defense Fund (CSLDF) has found a nonprofit home in Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) which provides it fiscal sponsorship and logistical support. CSLDF lets scientific colleagues and the public directly help climate scientists protect themselves and their work from industry-funded legal attacks.

In recent years, these legal attacks have intensified, especially against climate scientists. The fund is designed to help scientists like Professor Michael Mann cope with the legal fees that stack up in fighting attempts by climate-contrarian groups to gain access to private emails and other correspondence through lawsuits and Freedom of Information Act requests at their public universities.

The project is co-directed by physical sciences Professor Scott Mandia of Suffolk County Community College and Joshua Wolfe, co-author of ?Climate Change: Picturing the Science.? The Fund started this past fall after Prof. Mandia posted a ?Dear Colleague? appeal for support which generated more than $10,000 in less than 24 hours (http://bit.ly/qzg7X4). To date, CSLDF has raised $25,000. All contributions to CSLDF are tax-deductible.

?Academic salaries are not designed to support ongoing legal expenses in fights with corporate-funded law firms and institutes,? said Prof. Mandia. ?These legal battles also have taken many of our brightest scientific minds away from their research.?

?Our goal is not only to defend the scientist but to protect the scientific endeavor,? explained Wolfe. ?The Climate Science Legal Defense Fund was established to make sure that these legal claims are not viewed as an action against one scientist or institution but as actions against the scientific endeavor as a whole.?

In addition to its core mission of defraying legal fees, CSLDF will ?

? Educate researchers about their legal rights and responsibilities on issues surrounding their work;
? Serve as a clearinghouse for information related to legal actions taken against scientists; and
? Recruit and assist lawyers representing these scientists.

?The Climate Science Legal Defense Fund dovetails with the mission of PEER ? to protect those who protect our environment,? stated PEER executive Director Jeff Ruch. ?When individual researchers find themselves under intense legal assault, they often have few resources. Their universities do not necessarily represent their interests and may be disinclined to resist corporate fishing expeditions. We are stepping into this void to provide direct aid to both the scientists and their institutions.?

Support climate scientists ? give to the fund

Lauren Morello at ClimateWire (by subscription) writes (?Nonprofit group to help defend scientists facing legal actions?):

? The Climate Science Legal Defense Fund began last year as a grass-roots campaign to help defray the legal costs incurred by Mann as he fights a request from the conservative American Tradition Institute for emails he exchanged with other scientists while he was employed by the University of Virginia. ?

Scott Mandia, a professor of physical sciences at Suffolk County Community College, jump-started the effort to aid Mann last year when he posted a “Dear Colleague” letter on his blog. ?

“Mike [Mann] is client number one,” Mandia said. “He still has outstanding legal fees.”

In addition to his legal battle against the American Tradition Institute, Mann is at the center of a fight between Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R) and the University of Virginia. Cuccinelli is seeking emails and other documents from the school as he investigates whether Mann, who received state grant money during his tenure at UVA, violated the Virginia Fraud Against Taxpayers Act.

On the CSLDF website:

The Climate Science Legal Defense Fund:

Protecting the Scientific Endeavor

The Climate Science Legal Defense Fund was established with one goal: to protect the scientific endeavor. Scientific research has brought us amazing advancements in technology, medicine, and in our basic understanding of the planet. Over the last twenty years, a small handful of politically-motivated think tanks and legal foundations, because they disliked certain scientific findings, have taken legal action against scientific institutions and individual scientists. In recent years, the legal attacks have intensified, especially against climate scientists.

The scientific method is designed around the belief that skepticism is good. Results should be subjected to the utmost scrutiny through the peer review process, followed by close examination and replication by others in the scientific community. Those whose ideas do not live up to the standards of rigorous science have instead chosen to litigate.

For the individual scientist these legal actions are a painful burden. Academic salaries were not designed to support ongoing legal expenses. Legal actions also have taken many of our brightest scientific minds away from their research to focus on frivolous lawsuits. This state of affairs is unacceptable. The United States of America should be the leader in science and technology, and it cannot do so if unscrupulous people subject our scientists to these actions.

The Climate Science Legal Defense Fund was established to make sure that these legal claims are not viewed as an action against one scientist or institution, but that they are seen as actions against the scientific endeavor as a whole. As such the Fund will defend climate scientists who are dragged into litigation and act aggressively to protect the interests of the scientific endeavor.

In addition, the Climate Science Defense Fund will create platforms and opportunities for members of the scientific community to gain a better understanding of the legal issues surrounding their work.

SOPA and PIPA are stalled (or dead) in the halls of the U.S. Congress. Yet, there may be a bigger, perhaps more dangerous threat to Internet freedoms on the way, called the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, or ACTA. At least that’s how U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, R. – Calif., sees it, telling an audience, “As a member of Congress, it’s more dangerous than SOPA. It’s not coming to me for a vote. It purports that it does not change existing laws. But once implemented, it creates a whole new enforcement system and will virtually tie the hands of Congress to undo it.”

[More from Mashable: Super Bowl-Bound Ochocinco Calls Out Boehner on Twitter]

The stunning declaration came during what was actually an upbeat panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The convo, part of Mashable’s Documented@Davos program at the WEF, featured U.S. Rep. Issa, Wikipedia Founder Jimmy Wales, Google SVP and Chief Legal Officer David Drummond, Scribd Cofounder and CEO Trip Adler, and Mashable CEO Pete Cashmore.

Congress’s inability to change ACTA, Issa added, is “what makes ACTA very dangerous. It sounded probably to people like a good idea, but people should ask, why did they work around the WTO [World Trade Organization] and all the existing bodies? I think the answer is: They could work in secret. They could get it done, and then they could tell people you couldn’t change it.”

[More from Mashable: Meme Machine: 5 Hilarious Viral Topics Trending Right Now]

California Representative Darrell Issa (left) issues dire warning about ACTA at the World Economic Forum

Unlike SOPA, (Issa called it “radioactive”) and PIPA, which are bills in Congress, ACTA is a more far-reaching, global treaty that seeks to normalize copyright protection and intellectual property standards across participating nations. It even addresses offline issues like counterfeit pharmaceuticals. ACTA already has significant support. Signers include Poland, France, Italy, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland, South Korea and, yes, the U.S. (it signed last year). While it’s unclear if ACTA shares the same “draconian” enforcement measures, Issa said, “Many of the things in SOPA are basically implied in ACTA.”

If the movement against ACTA, which is gathering steam in countries such as Poland, takes off, the anti-SOPA protest may provide the blueprint for a wide-scale counteroffensive. Prior to the SOPA and PIPA protests, the panelist noted, the tech community had only informally lobbied Washington on issues like education, visas and other items not necessarily closely related to technology. However, the game changed with SOPA. The relatively young tech community, which, as Google’s Drummond noted, does not have the political organization or clout of, say, an older industry like Hollywood, transitioned from sending letters to Congress to taking direct action, and taking the issue directly to their site visitors and customers. Drummond said the Web community now may have “the prospects of a lasting coalition that will give us a bigger voice in Washington.”

Protesting SOPA

During the panel, Wikipedia?s Wales described how the community-sourced online encyclopedia made the decision to protest SOPA by going dark. He noticed in early December 2011 that “SOPA seemed to be on a fast track. Was really being pushed through and not a lot was being done to stop it.” The possibility of a Wikipedia protest was discussed and decided by the community. “In the end, we held a vote, and 87% were in favor,” recalled Wales. It was a dramatic act soon followed by many other online destinations. As Congressman Issa sees it, this was the right approach.

“I don?t want to understate the importance of money, I think everyone gets that that’s part of the process of politics at all levels. But …a broad coalition is more powerful than any amount of money.” Issa believes his fellow congressmen may now think twice before supporting similar legislation, “The next time the content community comes with a pre-packaged bill that they’ve written, every office is going to say, ‘And how does the tech community feel about it?’ ” Issa told the panel.

Issa has sponsored another piece of online legislation known as the Online Protection & ENforcement of Digital Trade Act or OPEN Act, which has found some support among Facebook and Google, two Internet companies that opposed SOPA and PIPA.

No one is denying the issues of copyright infringement and content piracy remain, but Scribd’s Trip Adler, who said his site “wouldn’t be able to exist if SOPA was in place,” thinks it?s time to take a different approach. “We can innovate our way to a solution that’s good for the users, good for the Internet and good for content owners,” he said. Google’s Drummond agreed, “There are ways to deal with these problems with technology and being smart about it where we don’t actually have to have legislation.”

ACTA on the Way

While panelists talked about what they saw as the relatively secrecy under which ACTA was authored, ACTA is by no means a new initiative. Posts about the act started emerging online as early as 2008 (the initiation began with the U.S. and Japan in 2006). Canada’s Foreign Affairs and International Trade site offers a comprehensive look at the act, and even tackles the claim that ACTA was built and ratified in secret: “This process has not been kept from the public. On October 23, 2007, the partners involved in ACTA at that time publicly announced that they had initiated preliminary discussions on ACTA. Several countries involved in ACTA have conducted public consultations on the key proposed elements of the ACTA.”

One thing is clear: The temperature is finally rising for ACTA, and at least one Congressman now publicly sees it as a greater threat than SOPA. You can see the entire panel in the exclusive video above.

What do you think? Is ACTA bigger, badder and more worrisome than SOPA and PIPA, or is Issa simply trying to steer votes to his own legislation? Share in the comments.

A Christian Science perspective.

The arrest of a former college football coach accused of molesting boys has made headlines in the United States and abroad, but sexual predation of children isn?t new, and takes different forms in different cultures. In many cases, legislation, prosecution, and improved social mores haven?t proved to be sufficient deterrents. But prayer based on the law of God can forward healing.

My framework for such prayer rests on valuing the spiritual nature of children. In both the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament, children are described in terms of their purity, innocence, wonder, courage, and humility. For example, the prophet Isaiah envisioned a time when ?the wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them? (Isaiah 11:6).

Matthew?s Gospel tells of a conversation Jesus had with his disciples about who was greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Calling a little child over to them, Jesus told his followers that they would not be able to enter the kingdom of heaven, unless they ?be converted, and become as little children.? He went on to say, ?Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven? (see 18:1-4).

This kingdom isn?t a theoretical concept or distant aspiration. It is our true homeland, whether or not we are aware of it. For the perpetrator and a child who has been molested, however, the peace of this kingdom may seem impossible to reach.

Both the Apostle Paul and Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer of Christian Science, saw reconciling man to God through Christ as key to changing that view. Christ is the divine idea of God, His likeness. So reconciling man to God through Christ means restoring man ? a generic term that also includes women and children ? to his original stainless selfhood, which is eternally inseparable from his Maker. As Paul put it, ?[A]ll things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation? (II Corinthians 5:18). In ?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? Mrs. Eddy brought out the inseparability of God and man when she wrote, ?It was … Christ?s purpose to reconcile man to God, not God to man? (p. 19). So, rather than God coming down to fix what appears to be a pervasive problem, we can instead uplift our thought to the reality of His kingdom and our right to this pure and uncontaminated identity as His children. This insistence on purity, love, and joy ? along with other childlike qualities ? restores our, and everyone?s, original selfhood as God?s child.

In practical terms, this means that any child who has been molested or abused can rediscover his or her forever stainless selfhood. To reconcile themselves to God through Christ means to accept the permanent perfection that God has already given them. By doing this, they?ll find that their true selfhood ? constituted of spiritual qualities, not a physical body ? has never been compromised. They have never fallen away from God?s tender grace or lost their innate purity.

Those who abuse and molest need reconciliation to Christ also, but for them it requires reformation. One must stop identifying with a false selfhood that includes impurity, manipulation, and other unseemly characteristics. Reformation reveals the distance between these actions and one?s true spiritual selfhood. Reconciliation comes as one chooses and sticks with the path of Spirit, which will wash away the desire to continue in a mistake. Throughout his ministry, Jesus gave as key to demonstrating one?s inseparability from God: ?[G]o, and sin no more? (John 8:11).

For both the victim and the victimizer, the discovery of this true, perfect selfhood requires persistence, but is so worth the effort. It reveals the pure, unstained, satisfied, and unadulterated nature that each has through their citizenship in the kingdom of heaven.

This article, originally titled “Finding healing for victim and victimizer,” appeared in the Christian Science Sentinel dated Jan. 16 & 23.

The latest addition Walkman series continues the petite styling we’ve seen over the years, and Sony’s cheerleading that it’s both thinner (9.1mm) and lighter (37g) than its predecessor. The E-series includes a 1.4-inch colour LCD display, while we’re promised at around 30 hours of music playback per charge. Alongside the standard NW-E060 model (9,000 yen, $116) the NW-E060K (11,000 yen, $142) throws in a plug-in speaker. Both models offer noise-cancelling features and promise to cut surrounding noise by around 98 percent, with train, flight and indoor modes hopefully able to absorb most audio irritations.

The new music players are joined by a pair of new docks. The RDP-NWG400B (13,000 yen, $181) can connect to devices through Bluetooth, while the RDP-NWM7 (8,000 yen, $140) wants to take your music outside, bigging up the built-in handle for that very reason. Both are available now in white and black. No news on whether the player refreshes and docks will travel beyond the Land of the Rising Sun, but we’d imagine it’s pretty likely. Check out the docks after the break and get the whole (Google-translated) picture at the source below.

New York ? The Arizona Democrat formally resigns from Congress, vowing she “will recover and will return.” But return to where?

Amid tears and applause from her colleagues, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz) resigned from the House on Wednesday, a year after she was shot in the head during a Tucson shooting rampage that killed six people. After the House unanimously passed her final piece of legislation ? a bill that would increase prison sentences for smugglers flying drugs in from Mexico on ultralight aircraft ? Giffords received an emotional standing ovation from her congressional colleagues. “It’s clich? to say there wasn’t a dry eye in the room,” says Chad Pergram at Fox News. But in this case, “it’s also accurate.” Giffords’ replacement will be decided in a June special election. But what’s next for Gifford herself? Here’s what you should know:

First of all, how is Giffords’ recovery going?
Her family and doctors sound upbeat. Still, Giffords has trouble speaking and forming sentences, a condition known as aphasia. Nancy Helm-Estabrooks, who has been working with Giffords, says that while the Arizonan has trouble with long sentences, she uses “high-information words” that convey a lot of meaning. “Gabby’s understanding of language is relatively spared,” Helm-Estabrooks tells The Charlotte Observer. “She watches movies. She watches the news,” and her husband, Mark Kelly, reports that he “can almost carry on a conversation with her.” “She’s remembered every boy she’s ever kissed, every song she’s ever sang, every bill she’s ever passed,” Giffords’ mother, Gloria, tells the AP. “So upward and onward.”

SEE MORE: Tucson shootings: One year later, has America learned anything?

?

What’s her prognosis?
“I don’t give false hope, and I’m pretty realistic in what I say about people with aphasia,” says Helm-Estabrooks.?”But I have no doubt she’s going to continue to recover and recover and recover…. You haven’t heard the last of her yet.” I’m very optimistic,?Kelly tells the AP. “She just needs some more time, whether it’s a year or two years or three years, I’m very confident she’s going to have a long and effective career as a public servant.”

Will Giffords run for Congress again?
She is certainly dropping hints that she might. In her resignation letter, read by friend Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), Giffords says she has “more work to do on my recovery before I can again serve in elected office,” but that she “will recover and will return, and we will work together again, for Arizona and for all Americans.” In the meantime, says Alex Isenstadt at?Politico, Democrats expect Giffords to play “kingmaker” in the race to fill her House seat, anointing the Democrat she feels would best carry out her legacy, than giving that candidate a boost in what’s expected to be a very competitive general election.

SEE MORE: Gabrielle Giffords’ ‘bittersweet’ resignation video

?

What if she doesn’t run again?
“We should take her at her word” that she’ll return, says Tom Zoellner at CNN, but “that doesn’t mean a return to elective office.” In fact, Congress may well “be too small for” the heroic Giffords. “She now has a golden opportunity to start a ‘Gabrielle Giffords Institute’ for the study of gun violence or mental health care reform or solar energy or whatever public policy issue she wants to emphasize. Her moral authority and influence may be better used outside… the daily grind of politics and partisanship.” Yes, “I?kind of think she’s transcended Congress,” says Gloria Giffords. But as to what’s next, “I don’t know where she’s going to end up.”

LAS VEGAS ? President Barack Obama is courting Hispanics in politically important states, setting himself up as a champion of the crucial Latino voting bloc and as a foil to Republican candidates fighting for a share of support from the same groups.

With Latino voters voting overwhelmingly Democratic, Obama is not in danger of losing the support of a majority of Hispanics. But he does need their intensity, and a Gallup tracking poll shows that while a majority of Hispanics approve of Obama, that approval is not as high as it is among black voters.

Pitching his economic agenda during a three-day, five state trip this week, Obama has not ignored the fact that three of the states ? Nevada, Arizona and Colorado ? all have Hispanic populations of 20 percent or more. A majority of them are Democratic, but they also could be a factor in upcoming nominating contests in those states. Nevada and Colorado hold caucuses within two weeks and Arizona has a primary Feb. 28.

In Arizona Wednesday, where he was drawing attention to his efforts to increase manufacturing, Obama playfully interacted with a supporter who shouted out: “Barack es mi hermano! (Barack is my brother) !”

“Mi hermano ? mucho gusto (My brother, a real pleasure),” Obama shouted back.

And it was no accident that he scheduled an interview with Univision, the Spanish language network that reaches a broad swath of the U.S. Latino population, while he was in Arizona, heading for Nevada and Colorado, and while former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and the rest of the Republican presidential field were battling in Florida.

No issue reverberates more in the appeal to Latinos than immigration.

For Obama, it reared up suddenly for him Wednesday when Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican who signed one of the toughest laws to curtail illegal immigration, greeted him at the airport tarmac in Mesa, Ariz., with a handwritten invitation for the president to join her in a visit to the Mexican border.

Obama replied coolly, noting that he did not appreciate the way she had depicted him in a book she published last year, “Scorpions for Breakfast.” In the book, Brewer writes that Obama was condescending and lectured her during a meeting at the White House to discuss immigration. “He was a little disturbed about my book,” Brewer told two reporters shortly after the encounter.

Obama continued to promote his economic plan Thursday, focusing on energy policy and his attempts to expand oil and gas exploration while also emphasizing clean energy. As such, he was indirectly pitching to Hispanics as well. A new Pew Research Center poll found that 54 percent of Latinos believe that the economic downturn has been harder on them than on other groups in the U.S.

In 2008, Obama beat Republican John McCain by a 2-1 margin among Hispanics.

To win again, he will need that level of enthusiasm to make up for weaknesses elsewhere in his voter support. In a bright spot for Obama, the Pew poll found that even though Hispanics believe their economic condition is poor, two-thirds of those polled said they expect their financial situation to improve over the next year, whereas 58 percent of the overall population expect the same.

In his interview with Univision, Obama made a point of noting that both Romney and Gingrich have said they would veto legislation, known as the DREAM Act, that would give a pathway to citizenship to children who came to the United States illegally but who attend college or enlist in the military.

“They believe that we should not provide a pathway to citizenship for young people who were brought here when they were very young children and are basically American kids but right now are still in a shadow,” Obama said. “They’ve said that they would veto the DREAM Act. Both of them.”

At a debate Monday on NBC, however, both Gingrich and Romney said they would support modified legislation that only applied to young people who joined the military. “I would not support the part that simply says everybody who goes to college is automatically waived for having broken the law,” Gingrich said.

Obama, in the interview, explicitly connected the Republican presidential field to congressional Republicans, who suffer from bottom-dwelling approval ratings right now. Asked why he had been unable to deliver on his promise for overhauling the immigration system, Obama replied:

“Well, it’s very simple. We couldn’t get any Republican votes. Zero. None,” he said. “So this is the kind of barrier that we’re meeting in Congress. We’re just going to keep on pushing and pushing until hopefully we finally get a break.”
